QUICK COOK
Spring Has Sprung
Cherry trees in bloom are one of the
first harbingers of spring. Ironically, their delicate pink blossoms look
almost like snow as they fall from the trees. But it's warm weather that's just
around the corner when you see the cherry blooms. So it's been a long tradition
in Japan – and now the United States – to celebrate spring with a Cherry
Blossom Festival.
All over the U.S. and Japan, from late
March through April, are special cherry blossom events. In Washington, D.C.,
there are two weeks of celebrations, to commemorate the donation of over 3,000
cherry trees from Japan to the U.S. in 1912. Those trees now line the Tidal
Basin near the Jefferson Memorial, bordering the Potomac River.
Wherever the festivities, there are
often Japanese cultural events like taiko drumming, traditional foods, parades
and performances. It's a wonderful chance to learn more about Japanese culture,
or celebrate your own heritage! And what better time to take a picnic and spend
some time outdoors. Pack some of our quick Japanese-inspired recipes in your
basket and find a sunny spot.
